School youngsters celebrate Bury's history and geography

Monday 6th May 2024

Youngsters at St Stephen's CE Primary School from Years One to Six completed the selection of activities around the premises in six groups named after famous people from Bury.

The well known names listed were Robert Peel, Danny Boyle, Victoria Derbyshire, the Neville brothers, Layton Williams and Cherie Blair

The children completed six activities, including a famous Bury landmark "scavenger hunt", and a drama activity where they reenacted the town's timeline from its origin to its present day.

Showing their creative side, the pupils were given half the face of a famous person from Bury before sketching the other side.

They also made jigsaws out of a map of Bury and created Monopoly boards including local streets, East Lancashire Railway stations and borough-themed "community chest" and "chance cards".

The youngsters also played Guess Who using information about the "local heroes" their groups were named after.

And when they returned to class they played "Bury Bingo" using drone footage of the borough.

Early years foundation stage youngsters at the Colville Drive school attended an assembly and completed an orienteering activity where they searched for popular landmarks, recognising places they had visited.

Year Five teacher Isabel Potter, the school's history and geography lead, said, "We wanted our children to feel a sense of local pride and we achieved just that.

"The children truly made some incredible memories and learnt a lot about brilliant Bury."

A Year Four pupil added: "I love being from Bury and I can't wait to go to Burrs after learning about it."

A parent said: "I was born in Bury and so were my children. It is a special place for my family and it is lovely to see the school celebrating it."
