Four Bury schools praised for helping disadvantaged pupils

Saturday 21st Feb 2026

The schools - Chantlers, Woodbank, St Stephen’s CE, and St Joseph and St Bede’s- were recognised as among the best in the country for supporting the achievement of disadvantaged children.

Bury North MP James Frith congratulated the schools for their “excellent outcomes,” ranking in the top quartile nationally.

Mr Frith said: "I want to congratulate Chantlers, Woodbank, St Stephen’s CE, and St Joseph and St Bede’s Primary Schools on this outstanding achievement and deserved recognition for all their hard work.

"Having visited each of these schools, I’ve seen first-hand the dedication of staff and the incredible learning environments they create, making this achievement truly well deserved.

"This is exactly the difference that a Labour Government is making here in Bury North; breaking down barriers to opportunity, so every child can achieve and thrive.

"I look forward to working with the schools to spread best practice across Bury North, delivering our Plan for Change and giving local children the best start in life."

The recognition came in a letter from Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, who praised headteachers Phillip Barlow, Jane Myerscough, Sally Denney, and Claire Gilmore.

Ms Phillipson said: "Congratulations to all the teams at Chantlers, Woodbank, St Stephen’s CE, and St Joseph and St Bede’s Primary Schools.

"Their performance places them amongst the very best nationally, and this is a significant achievement.

"This success reflects the dedication of the staff and the hard work of pupils.

"It shows what can be achieved when ambition and commitment come together. These achievements demonstrate what is possible, and I look forward to working with the team as we strive together to raise standards for all."
